Use Gmail For Mailto Links Brave & Chrome


Many of us will have had the experience of clicking a mailto: link only to be presented with a desktop client we don’t use.

In fact you may have even found yourself typing an address out manually in that situation because mailto: has got in the way.

But there’s a very simple way to set up mailto: in either Chrome or Brave (which uses the open-source Chromium engine, like Chrome) to automatically open Gmail when you click any mailto: link.

Here are the simple steps:

Brave

  1. Go to settings (shortcut cmd + ,)

  1. Click the additional settings link at the bottom of the page to show more settings

  1. Click on site settings from the subsequent extra menus

  1. Navigate down and click on the the handlers section

  1. Make sure allow sites to ask to become default handlers for protocols is activated AND make sure Gmail is not in the blocked list (if it is, remove it, and restart your machine (ideally))

  1. Sign-in to Gmail. On the right-hand side of the URL bar you will see the same handler icon as you saw in the settings list for handlers, click it, and select allow.

  1. Find a mailto: link and test it out. (If you’re searching for a mailto link you can find one at Rate The Match in the footer by clicking the mail icon (envelope). You will see that the compose message window opens in gmail!

Chrome

  1. Sign-in to Chrome

    1. Advisable so you can sync the mailto setting across desktop devices

  2. Go to settings (shortcut cmd + ,)
